CDP News: May 1, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Welcome to May everyone. Summer is right around the corner, but we’ve still got plenty on our schedule.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we were in Ann Arbor, MI for a Tier 2 training for the Star Behavioral Health Providers. Then on Thursday we visited Logansport, IN also for the SBHP program. Then next week we’ll be in Fort Wayne, IN. For more information on the SBHP program and the various training tiers, please visit the program’s page here.
Speaking of upcoming training events, next Wednesday and Thursday we will be hosting an online training in Prolonged Exposure therapy via Second Life. These online events have proven to be very popular and serve as a great way for the CDP to offer training to those who otherwise might not be able to attend. On a related note, if you’d like to be notified when registration opens for future online events, you can sign up for our online events mailing list here. Once you’re signed up, you’ll automatically be emailed when we open registration for upcoming online training events.
There is about one month to go to before registration closes for our upcoming Great Lakes Regional 1-Week Civilian Training. This iteration will be held in Minneapolis, MN 15-19 June. This extensive course is designed to provide education on deployment-spectrum behavioral health concerns facing the military population. There are two overall tracks, featuring a variety of breakout sessions to choose from. The first track focuses on the treatment of PTSD, while the second is based on health psychology. For more information or to sign up, please visit the event page here.
Over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry discussed a great video by author and filmmaker Sebastian Junger. The video is of a TED talk in which Junger discusses his experiences alongside Service members in Afghanistan and why Veterans miss combat. It’s a relatively short video, but is well-worth a few moments of your time. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.
This week we also posted the most recent entry in our ongoing series of CDP Podcasts. In it, Dr. Bill Brim talks about how sleep is regulated. You can listen to it from our podcasts page here. While you’re at it, if you haven’t been able to attend our last few quarterly webinars live, we’ve got recordings of both available for on demand viewing here. We currently have the previous two sessions, one on Moral Injury and the other on the CAPS-5. We’ll be adding more as time goes on.
That’s it for this week. Hopefully, everyone has some nice spring weather to enjoy this weekend. We’ll see you back here on Monday with a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
