CDP News: May 15, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was a very busy week for us all here, so let’s get to it!

We had trainers out all across the country this week, literally. In support of the Star Behavioral Health Providers Program, we sent teams of trainers out to Greenville, SC, Oceanside, CA and Ann Arbor, MI to help train up providers in those states. Next up, we’re off to Akron, OH next Wednesday. We also brought EBP training events to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii and Fort Benning Georgia. Next Wednesday we’ll be training at Hill AFB in Utah.

Speaking of upcoming training events, our upcoming Great Lakes Regional 1-Week Civilian Training is a great opportunity for behavioral health providers. It will be held in Minneapolis, MN 15-19 June. This extensive course is designed to provide education on deployment-spectrum behavioral health concerns facing the military population. There are two overall tracks, featuring a variety of breakout sessions to choose from. The first track focuses on the treatment of PTSD, while the second is based on health psychology. For more information or to sign up, please visit the event page here.

This week’s Staff Perspective column is by Dr. Carin Lefkowitz. In it, she writes about how to determine when a client is ready for an evidence-based psychotherapy. It’s an important topic and one that comes up frequently at our training events.  Many providers are confident in their own knowledge and readiness to use EBPs, but are unsure about complications or difficulties their clients may have, which can make EBPs more difficult. Dr. Lefkowitz does a great job of detailing potential barriers and how to ensure patient readiness. Also in the blog, don’t forget to take a look at this week’s new Research Update. As always it’s packed with the latest news, articles and useful links and well-worth checking out.

Finally, May is Military Appreciation Month. If you’re interested in learning more about military culture, we suggest checking out the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each of the four modules in the course is eligible for two CEU credits upon completion of the final exam.

That’s it for this time around. Enjoy the weekend everyone and join us back here next week for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
