CDP News: June 12, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It’s been a very busy week around here and we’ve got plenty coming up on the horizon as well!
This week marked the inaugural session of the CDP Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Career. We brought in psychology students from across the country to take part in a unique training experience at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). All week, attendees have been learning about how to succeed in a military clinical psychology pre-doctoral internship and a career in military behavioral health. They learned about military culture, interacted with training directors from military treatment facilities, and were instructed on evidence-based practices. It was a very successful program and we’re already considering how we can make it even better going forward.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we held simultaneous Tier 2 training events in both Indianapolis, IN and Azusa, CA. Visit the SBHP section of our website for more information about the program and the associated training tiers.
Then on Wednesday and Thursday, we were in Lexington at the University of Kentucky to present a training on Cognitive Processing Therapy as part of the UC4-E. Next Thursday, we’ll be in Montgomery, AL at Faulkner University presenting base University Counseling Center Core Competency program. Today is the final day to register for our Great Lakes Regional 1-Week Civilian Training! This five-day training will be held in Minneapolis, MN from 15-19 June. It is designed to provide education for civilian behavioral health providers on deployment-spectrum behavioral health concerns facing the military population. It features the choice of two overall tracks, featuring a variety of breakout sessions to choose from. The first track focuses on the treatment of PTSD, while the second is based on health psychology. For more information or to sign up, please visit the event page here.
Also, if you’re unable to travel, but still interested in attending some of our training events, take a look at our upcoming training calendar. We’ve got numerous online events that allow you to expand your knowledge from the comfort of your own home. Our next event will be a Cognitive Processing Therapy training on 1-2 July via Second Life.
Finally, over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Libby Parins, who took a look at “Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain” and discussed how many of the theories and principles on suicide were displayed in the book. It’s tragic to see how many of the concepts we talk about in suicide prevention training can be easily seen in the biography. If you haven’t already, it’s certainly worth taking a few minutes to read and reflect on Dr. Parins’ entry.
