CDP News: Sept. 18, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was another busy week here at the CDP and we’ve got plenty more coming up, so let’s dive right in.
First up, today the University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) team is in Harrisonburg, VA to present at James Madison University. Next Wednesday, we’ll be headed to Joliet, IL to present at the University of St. Francis. If you’d like to learn more about the UC4 program, including how you can bring us to your local college or university, visit the program’s page here.
This week we also presented the latest iteration of the week-long “Topics in Military & Deployment Psychology” course. This course brings together uniformed providers from all branches of the military for in-depth training on a variety of issues including general military and deployment psychology, TBIs, sleep disorders, suicide, and the use of evidence-based psychotherapies in the military. It can be challenging to coordinate all of the logistics involved in these events, but they’re always well-worth the effort when we hear about the value and knowledge that participants take home. Click here for more information about this program.
For civilians looking for in-depth training, registration for the next Regional Civilian One-Week Training event is currently ongoing. The event will be held in the Albany, NY-metro area (specifically, Latham, NY) from 26-30 October. Registration for the event is $95 and includes up to 34 CE credits. The five-day of training covers topics including military culture, the deployment cycle, sleep disorders, working with military families, as well as training in Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy. It’s a great opportunity to receive a lot of valuable training in one sitting. If you’d like to be emailed when registration for future Regional One-Week Civilian Training opportunities, please complete the form here.
However, if you can’t make it to one of our training events in person, our online events may be just the thing. Our next two-day evidence-based psychotherapy training will be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) on 15-16 October. This training will be held via Second Life and will cover the fundamentals of CBT-D with regards to working with Service members and Veterans. The course will also include 13.5 CEs.
If you’re looking for a shorter event, registration for our next CDP Presents webinar is also open. The topic will be “Behavioral Health Concerns in Military Connected Patients”. The webinar will be held from 12:00-1:30 p.m. EDT on 14 October. Those who attend the webinar and complete a brief post-event survey and assessment will be eligible for one free CE. If you’d like to see the format, we’ve got recordings of several previous events in this series available for on-demand viewing. There are several great topics to watch.
Second Life is a new medium for a lot of people and that brings with it a certain level of uncertainty for participants and even some presenters. This week’s Staff Perspective by Dr. Libby Parins talks about just that. She details her experiences as a first-time presenter in Second Life. Dr. Parins discusses her initial reservations and her eventual embrace of the platform. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.
That’s it for this time around. Have a great weekend everyone and we’ll see you back here on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column!
