CDP News: Dec. 4, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It’s good to be back to our normal schedule after the holiday disruption, but we’ve got lots of events to squeeze in before the next set of holidays roll around. Let’s take a look at what we’ve got!
On Thursday we held our final University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) event of the year. We visited Albany State University in Albany, GA. It was a great way to wrap up the year, but we’ll be back at in January when we head to Tallahassee, FL!
Next week we will be holding the latest iteration of our Topics in Military and Deployment Psychology course at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. This week-long program brings uniformed providers from all branches of the service together to train them on a variety of issues facing Service members, Veterans, and their families.
Next Wednesday, 9 December from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST, is our monthly CDP Presents webinar. The topic this time around is “Understanding Depression in Service Members and Veterans: An Overview.” This presentation will be held by CDP staff members, Dr. Kimberly Copeland and Dr. Marjorie Weinstock. Depression is a very serious issue and it’s one we receive many requests to train on, so we’re happy to be able to offer this topic. This presentation will also include one free CE for participants who register, attend the presentation, and complete a post-event evaluation. Check out the previous entries in our “CDP Presents” series here.
If you’re interested in a more in-depth exploration of depression, we’ll be holding a two day training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life on 10-11 February. For more information on this course or to sign up, please click here. Speaking of online events, registration is also ongoing for our online two-day Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) training on 14-15 January. Registration for this event is $30 and comes with 13.5 CEs. CBT trainers Dr. Carin Lefkowitz and Dr. Andrew Santanello will be presenting this event.
In the CDP Blog this week, Dr. Caitlin Cook wrote a column entitled “Military. Family. Stability!?!” In it she discusses a new bill in Congress, the Military Family Stability Act of 2015. This proposal is designed to provide flexibility for the families of Service members who are going through a permanent change of station (PCS). After a break last week, the Research Update is back! As usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.
That’s all for this time around. We’ll see everyone back here next week for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
