CDP News: Mar. 25, 2016
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This was a crazy week around here, as we had multiple events going on all week long.
First and foremost, we were out in Long Beach, CA for our Regional One-Week Civilian Training event. This was one of our largest One-Week training events we’ve had in a while! As always, it was great to get to meet and interact with so many behavioral health providers doing such good work in the field. Registration for our next One-Week event, to be held 4-8 April in Des Moines, IA end this Sunday. We’re getting close to full on this event, so if you’re interested in attending, sign up today! We’re working on finalizing the details for a few other locations as well. We’ll be in Boise, ID 16-20 May and Columbus, OH 13-17 June. These are great opportunities to learn about working with a military population or to expand your knowledge. We hope to see you at one of these events!
We also ran the latest iteration of our Topics in Military and Deployment Psychology training. This course brings uniformed providers from all branches of military service to the Uniformed University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD for a five days of training on deployment spectrum issues. Running two week-long training events on opposite sides of the country made for a busy week for all of us here at CDP!
If that wasn’t enough to keep us occupied, we also visited Oswego, NY to present the University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) course at SUNY – Oswego. We were in Cincinnati, OH as part of the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program.
We were also busy in the virtual world, as we held a two-day training on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) on Wednesday and Thursday in Second Life. Registration for our next online training on Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) to be held 14-15 April is available here.
Over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective was by Dr. Carin Lefkowitz. She discussed her own very personal experience with coping with the suicide of a loved one and the associated stigma. It’s a very powerful and touching entry that is well-worth the time to read. Continuing March’s theme of brain injury awareness, the Guest Perspective blog, “Understanding and Treating Traumatic Brain Injury”, was by Dr. Alison Cernich. Dr. Cernich examines some of the common signs, symptoms, and treatments for TBIs. Also, don’t forget to check out the Research Update as usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.
That’s all for this time around. We’re going to take a well-deserved break this weekend to recharge our batteries! Come back next week for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” feature!
