CDP News: Jan. 13, 2017

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. There’s lot to talk about in the coming weeks, so let’s get to it!

First up, today is the last day to register for this year’s The Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Career program. This five-day course is intended for psychology doctoral students who are interested in applying for a military internship in 2017 or 2018. It is designed to provide firsthand knowledge of military culture, showcase the work of military psychologists, and some of the evidence-based strategies used to treat Veterans and Service members. If you or someone you know is interested in taking part, get those applications in before close of business today!

On Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be holding an online training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). Registration for this event is closed. However, we’ve got a couple of other great options if you’re looking for online training. On 24 January, we’ll be holding our monthly webinar, CDP Presents. This time around we’ll be teaming up with Army One Source to offer “Using Veteran Peers to Improve Access to Mental Health Services and Support Recovery.” The event will be held via Adobe Connect from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. As with most of our CPP Presents events, those who attend and complete a short post-training survey/evaluation will be eligible for one free CE credit. Registration is also open for our next online Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) training, which will be held 22-23 February via Second Life.

As far as in-person training events go, keep an eye on our Regional Civilian One-Week Training section, we’ll be announcing the final dates and details for our spring of 2017 session, coming up soon.

This week in the CDP blog, we had a great entry in our Guest Perspective series, as Jerri Haaven, Veteran and Navy mom, discussed the often-forgotten role of parents in her blog, “Parents of Service Members – An Underserved Sub-culture of America’s Armed Forces.” Our Staff Perspective column was entitled “A Quiz on Chronic Pain Research.” Find out what you know about Chronic Pain with this brief quiz put together by Dr. Dave Reynolds. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with all the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That’s it for this time around. We hope everyone manages to avoid any bad luck today and we’ll see you on Monday for a new “By the Numbers” column!
