CDP News: 26 October 2018
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Halloween’s just around the corner and then the holiday season will be almost upon us.
We were excited to open up registration for next year’s Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces will kick-off. Next year's event will be held 10-14 June 2019. The Summer Institute is a five-day course for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology. The application period will close on 22 January 2019. On Thursday, we held our monthly CDP Presents webinar entitled, “Psychological Interventions in Pain Management.” This program reviews chronic pain education and common treatment pathways, including evidence-based approaches to understanding and treating chronic pain. If you missed it, a recording is available for on-demand viewing here. For those interested in CEs, it should be available for credit in the next week or so.
Our next CDP Presents will be “Building Military Family Resilience.” It will be held on 9 November and will present a general overview of military family resilience. A summary of the basic demographics of military families will be presented in addition to normative stressors associated with military family life. Factors that can promote or impede military family resilience will be reviewed, as well as practical, evidence-base interventions and skills that providers can employ to enhance resilience in military families. Finally, resources regarding available programs aimed at promoting family resilience will be shared. Participants are eligible to receive 1.5 CEs for this free event. Also in November, we will be holding our first online Serving Student Veterans on Campus training on the 13th. This day-long core competency is designed to address cultural and clinical concerns of Veterans and Service members on a university or college campus. This will be our first online presentation of this training and we’re excited to share it with all of the participants. Registration for this event is $30 and comes with 7 CEs.
Registration is filling up quickly for our next online EBP training, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). The training will be held on 27-28 November. Registration for this event will be $45 and come with 13.5 CEs. There are only a few slots left in this event, so if you’re interested in participating, we suggest signing up soon!
Dr. Kim Copeland uses her experience with the Navy’s Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation Program (SARP) to discuss 10 things to consider with working with Service members dealing with a drug or alcohol problem.
