CDP News: 12 October 2018
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was a short week, due to the holiday on Monday, but we were still busy.
Registration is open for our next CDP Presents webinar. This month’s topic is “Psychological Interventions in Pain Management.” It will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on 24 October. The aims of this program are to review chronic pain education and common treatment pathways. More specifically, evidence-based approaches to understanding and treating chronic pain will be provided. Talking tips for use with patients regarding education and recommended treatment approaches will be covered throughout the presentation. Participants are eligible to receive 1.5 CEs for this free event. For more details or to register, please click here.
While you’re there, registration is open for November’s CDP Presents as well, on “Building Military Family Resilience.” It will be held on 9 November and will present a general overview of military family resilience. A summary of the basic demographics of military families will be presented in addition to normative stressors associated with military family life. Factors that can promote or impede military family resilience will be reviewed, as well as practical, evidence-base interventions and skills that providers can employ to enhance resilience in military families. Finally, resources regarding available programs aimed at promoting family resilience will be shared.
Sign-ups are also ongoing for the Serving Student Veterans on Campus, which will be held on 13 November. This day-long core competency is designed to address cultural and clinical concerns of Veterans and Service members on a university or college campus. This will be our first presentation of this training and we’re excited to share it with all of the participants. Registration for this event is $30 and comes with 7 CEs.
Also coming soon, registration for our next online EBP training, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), will open next week. The training will be held on 27-28 November. Registration for this event will be $45 and come with 13.5 CEs.
The application period for next year's Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces is going to begin on 22 October. Next year's event will be held 10-14 June 2019. The Summer Institute is a five-day course for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology. For more information on the program visit the Summer Institute page here.
Speaking of training events, in this week’s Staff Perspective on the CDP Blog, Dr. Diana Dolan discusses a few things you may wish to consider when looking at signing up for training in “Don’t Take My Word For It: How to Choose a Training.” She offers several handy tips and also examines the training opportunities provided by CDP. Also, don’t forget to check out the weekly CDP Research Update. It's packed with the latest journal articles, news and links from around the Web.
That’s it for this week. We hope everyone has a great weekend. Come back and see us right here next for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” series.
