CDP News: 15 August 2014

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re in the home stretch of summer, as we head into the second half of August, we’ve still got plenty to do!

Even though it’s summer, we’ve still going to schools. As part of our University Counseling Center Core Competency Program, we’ll be visiting the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA next Tuesday. The UC4 program is a great opportunity for the staff of colleges and universities to learn about the unique challenges faced by student-veterans returning to campus. For more information about this program or to learn how you can bring it to your local school, head over to the UC4 section of our website.

The Star Behavioral Health Program is going strong. Last Friday, Dr. Paula Domenici presented a webinar for SBHP participants entitled “Parent of Service Members: An Underserved Population.” We also presented a Tier Two training in person in Indiana on Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ve got another coming up next Tuesday and Wednesday down in Georgia. For more information about which states offer the SBHP program and the various training tiers, please click here.

There are about three weeks remaining to register for our upcoming Pacific Northwest Regional 1-Week Civilian training event in the Portland metro area. If you’re interested in more information or would like to sign up, please visit the event page here. Also, registration for our final 1 week training of the year will be opening in the next few weeks. Our Southeast Regional 1-Week Civilian training will be held 8-12 December in Miami, FL. Keep an eye on our training calendar or Facebook page for the latest details for this event.

If you’re unable to travel to these events, but are still interested in attending CDP training events, we’ve recently added two new online training events to our calendar. On 24-25 September, we’ll be hosting a workshop on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) via Second Life. Then on 28-29 October, we’ll be presenting a training on Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) via Adobe Connect. Both programs will be offering CEUs and have a registration fee of $27. We expect both of these programs to fill up, so if you're interested in attending, we suggest you sign up quick!

We’d like to remind people about our registration for our Military and Veteran Behavioral Health Post-Master’s Certificate program. For this unique training opportunity, CDP has partnered with Widener University to teach best clinical practices to mental health providers. The program covers a wide variety of topics including military culture, the deployment cycle, challenges faced by military families, depression, suicide and many more. This program is designed for non-military mental health professionals with at least a master’s degree who are actively treating, or plan to treat, the military/veteran population. The program is held over three weekends at Widener University in Chester, PA. For more information or to register, please visit the program page here.

In the CDP Blog this week, the Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Debra Nofziger. In it, she details the changes in the new Cognitive Processing Therapy Treatment Manual. She does a great job giving an overall look, while also providing all of the minor changes as well.. Also, don’t forget to read this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with the latest in news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see everyone on Monday for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
