CDP News: 17 August 2018
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re working our way through August and getting ready for a very busy September!
We’re going to be offering a ton of online training opportunities in September. We’ll begin the month with "Addressing Suicidal Behavioral in the U.S. Military: Strategies for Assessment, Crisis Intervention and Treatment" on 6-7 September in Second Life. This event is $45 and comes with 13.5 CEs. Then on 13 September, we will be presenting "Assessment and Treatment of Sleep Disturbances in Military Populations - Circadian Rhythm Disturbances." Registration is $15 and comes with 3.5 CEs. Next week, we’ll be opening registration for October’s EBP “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life.” If you would like to be notified by email of upcoming online events, you can also sign up by completing the form here.
On 26 September, we’ll be hosting all three of the Military Couples webinar topics. Beginning with “Military and Veteran Couples: Elements of the Assessment Process” at 10 a.m. Eastern, followed by “Military and Veteran Couples: Evidence-Based Approaches to Treatment” at 12:30 p.m. Eastern and finally “An Intervention Model for Working with Military Couples Who Have Experienced Infidelity” at 3 p.m. Eastern. Registration for each session is $10 and comes with two continuing education credits. These course are designed to support clinicians who provide couples counseling to a military-connected population. Each course is two-hours and incorporates research, best clinical practices, and interactive activities.
September is suicide prevention awareness month. To help spotlight this vitally important topic, CDP will be spotlighting suicide and suicide prevention. In addition to our two-day EBP training on suicide prevention, we will also be hosting hour-and-a-half long webinars on Thursdays, all month. Beginning on 6 September, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern, with "Suicide Survivorship: Applying TAPS best-practice Model to Support Military Families, Veterans, and Clinicians". Then on 13 September, we will feature "Suicide Prevention for Veterans with Other Than Honorable Discharges." On September 20, the webinar will be “Achieving the Promise of Suicidality Interventions: What Do We Know and How Do We Use It?” Finally, on 27 September, we’ll wrap up the webinar series with “Lethal Means Safety Counseling to Reduce Suicide Risk.” Participants who register, attend, and complete a brief post-training evaluation will be eligible to receive 1.5 CEs. For more information or to register for these webinars, visit our suicide prevention webinar series page here.
In addition to our webinar series, we will also be adding a new page full of information, reports, websites, and other resources designed to heighten awareness of suicide and suicide prevention. Keep an eye out for this page, launching in early September and let us know what you think!
This week on the CDP Blog, we took a look at some of the CDP’s “Online Training Opportunities,” many of which were listed above. Also, don’t forget to check out our weekly Research Update, as usual, it’s a great summary of the latest news, journal articles, and useful links from around the web.
With that, we're going to wrap things up for this time around. We hope everyone is enjoying their summer! Come back and see us next week. We'll have a brand new entry in our "By the Numbers" series on Monday!
