CDP News: 25 January 2019

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. January is coming to a close, but February looks to be even busier!

To start with, we're down to less than a week to submit applications for  this years' "The Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces." Applications (and the accompanying reference letters) are due by this Tuesday. This is a great program and we're really looking forward to presenting it again this June. So if you or someone you know is interested in participating, make sure you submit your application soon!

On Thursday and Friday, we held our first online EBP of the year on Prolonged Exposure. It was a packed virtual house, which is always good to see. Fo those who weren't able to attend this time around, we will be presenting another online PE training in June via Zoom. Our next online EBP will be a Suicide Prevention training coming up on 4-5 February. Sign-ups are currently available, but we'll be closing them down mid-next week, so if you'd like to attend this event, head over and sign up today. Registration for this event is $45 and comes with 13.5 CEs.

Also coming up in Feburary will be the CDP’s Couples Webinar Series. This series of four two-hour webinars will be held from 7-9 p.m. Eastern every Tuesday in February. The course topics are “Military and Veteran Couples: Elements of the Assessment Process,” “Military and Veteran Couples: Evidence-Based Approaches to Treatment,” “An Intervention Model for Working with Military Couples Who Have Experienced Infidelity,” and “Intimate Partner Violence: An Overview of Assessment and Response with Military-Connected Clients.” Tuition for each individual course is $18 or all four courses can be purchased as a bundle for $60. Each course comes with two CEs as well. To register or for more information about any of the webinars, you can visit the CWS page here

In addition to the CWS, on 20 Febuary, we will be holding our next CDP Presents webinar on "Tobacco Control in the Air Force - Trends and Treatment." This 90-minute webinar will discuss how changes in current trends create new challenges for behavioral health clinicians in reducing the burden of tobacco use on readiness and the health of the force. Clinical best practices to increase engagement and tobacco cessation will also be discussed. Registration is also available for our March CDP Presents event "The Basics of Sleep: What Every Provider Needs to Know".

This week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective was by Dr. Jeff Mann, who took a look at some of basic resources and philosopies of CPT and PE in his entry "Want To Improve Your CPT or PE Skills? Start With the Fundamentals!". It's a great piece if you're looking to start learning about PE and CPT or brush up on your current skills. Also, don't forget to check out this week's Research Update. As always, it's packed with the latest news, journal articles and useful links from around the Web.

That's all for this week's edition of CDP News. Join us right back here on Monday for a brand new entry in our "By the Numbers" column. Have a great weekend everyone and try to stay warm out there!
