CDP News: 29 August 2014
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re getting ready for the holiday weekend and the unofficial end of summer, but we’ve got plenty to talk about first.
Today is the second and final day of our online Prolonged Exposure Therapy Training session conducted in Second Life. It’s been very exciting to present these workshops in a new medium. It seem to work quite well for both the participants and our presenters. These online training events are so popular that we’ve added two more to our training calendar. There’s a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia Training in Second Life on 24-25 September, then we’ve got a Prolonged Exposure Therapy Training via Adobe Connect on 28-29 October. It’s a great way to take part in the high-quality training provided by CDP from the comfort and convenience of your own home. These training events always reach capacity and spots are filling fast. If you’re interested in attending either of these events, we suggest signing up soon!
If online training isn’t your thing, there’s one week left to register for our upcoming Pacific Northwest Regional 1-Week Civilian training event in the Portland metro area. If you’re interested in more information or would like to sign up, please visit the event page here. If you can’t make it to the west coast, registration for our final 1-week training of the year will be opening in early September. Our Southeast Regional 1-Week Civilian training will be held 8-12 December in Miami, FL. Keep an eye on our training calendar or Facebook page for the latest details for this event.
We’d like to remind people about our Registration for our Military and Veteran Behavioral Health Post-Master’s Certificate program. For this unique training opportunity, CDP has partnered with Widener University to teach best clinical practices to mental health providers. The program covers a wide variety of topics including military culture, the deployment cycle, challenges faced by military families, depression, suicide and many more. This program is designed for non-military mental health professionals with at least a master’s degree who are actively treating, or plan to treat, the military/veteran population. The program is held over three weekends at Widener University in Chester, PA. For more information or to register, please visit the program page here.
In the CDP Blog this week, the Staff Perspective column was by Dr. Diana Sermanian. She takes a look at the “8 Keys to Veterans’ Success on Campus.” CDP’s University Counseling Center Core Competency program is all about trying to help Veterans and Service members returning to school, so this is a very relevant topic for us and many others. Also, don’t forget to read this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with the latest in news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.
Finally, we’re proud to announce that the “Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals” online course is part of the new initiatives that President Obama referenced in his speech at the American Legion’s National Convention this week. If you haven’t seen it yet, we definitely recommend taking a look at the four modules.
That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you on the other side of it!
