CDP News: Dec. 6, 2013

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News. We like to take this time each week to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, as well as look ahead to upcoming events. The big event on the horizon for us is the latest iteration of our eight-day, military orientated training course, Topics in Deployment Psychology. This course brings in military providers from all branches of the armed forces to instruct them on the variety of behavioral health challenges faced by Service members and their families pre-, during, and post-deployment. It’s a great opportunity to educate and meet providers, but it’s also a lot of work for our team!

This week was busy at CDP headquarters, as we brought in many of our geographically-separated team members for some in-house training and updates. Having staff all across the country does provide us with some unique advantages, but it’s always nice to have some face-to-face time with everyone and do some in-person work.

Speaking of staff, we’ve recently posted even more available positions in our Jobs section. We’ve got open positions at our headquarters in Maryland, and ones ranging from Alaska all the way to Hawaii! So if you or someone you know are interested in working at the CDP, go take a look!

This week’s Staff Perspective shone a spotlight on a couple of relevant and interesting videos for our audience. The first was a recent piece that ran on 60 Minutes and showcased the use of Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) in treating Veterans with PTSD. PE and CPE are two of the evidence-based treatments that the CDP provides instruction on, so it was great to see them getting attention on a national stage. The second was a recording of a recent webinar presentation by CDP Deputy Director, Dr. Bill Brim, on common sleep disorders among military members. Insomnia and other sleep issues are quite common among Service members and Veterans, so it’s a topic that resonates with many providers working with a military population. After a week off for Thanksgiving, our Research Update was back and making up for lost time! As usual, it’s got all kinds of interesting and useful news, journal articles and links from all over the Web. Take a few minutes to look it over, if you missed it this week.

Finally, just a quick reminder that the weekly scheduled consultation call for this Monday, December 9, is cancelled, but we’ll be back on track the following week on December 16. Okay, that’s it for this time around. Have a great weekend and we’ll see everyone on Monday with a new entry in By the Numbers!
