CDP News: Jan. 22, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re getting ready for the blizzard that’s going to hit town, but before we hole up, let’s take a look at what else is going on.

We opened up registration for the upcoming Regional Civilian One-Week Training, to be held 21-25 March, in Long Beach, CA. It’s a great opportunity for provider who would like to begin working with a military population, or even those who already are, to increase their knowledge and competency in a variety of important topics. This five-day event will cover a variety of behavioral health concerns facing Service members, Veterans, and their families. For more information on this program or to register, please click here. If you’re unable to attend this event, but would like to hear about future iterations, you can sign up to be notified by completing the form here.

Speaking of registration, head over to the CDP Presents section of our site and sign up for next month’s webinar! Dr. Diana Dolan will discuss Chronic Pain 16 February, noon to 1:30 p.m. We’re still finalizing the CE information for this one, but we anticipate that participants who attend and complete a post-event evaluation and survey will be eligible for one free CE.

Another good opportunity for online learning and free CEs is the four-module Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. This self-paced online course is designed to help providers gain an understanding of the importance of and breadth of military culture. Each module in the course is eligible for two CE credits upon completion of the final exam, for a total of eight possible credits.

Assuming the weather cooperates, we’ll be back on the road next week to present more training events around the country. On Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be visiting Fort Wayne, IN to lead a suicide prevention training as part of the Star Behavioral Health Providers program. Then on Friday, we’ll be down in Florida at Tallahassee Community College to present the University Counseling Center Core Competency training for a consortium of local colleges and universities.

In the CDP Blog this week, Dr. Anthony McCormick examined how to decrease risk aversion in Service members who have deployed. He talked about the definition of “risk averse” and looked at how to put those feelings and tendencies into their proper context for Veterans and Service members. Also, don’t forget to check out the Research Update as usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s all for this time around. We hope everyone is able to stay safe and warm, wherever they may be this weekend! Hopefully, we’ll be able to make it back in to work next week!
