CDP News: May 6, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’ve got lots of exciting events on the calendar this time around. Let’s see what’s coming up.

First off, registration is now open for our One-Week Civilian Training event to be held 13-17 June in Columbus, OH. For more information about this training or to register, please click here. Sign-ups for the Boise, ID Regional Civilian One-Week Training event, 16-20 May, are also currently open, but they will close this Sunday. So if you’re interested in the May event, sign up today!

The Star Behavioral Health Providers program kept our trainers busy this week! On Tuesday and Wednesday, we were in New York City presenting for the program. Then Wednesday and Thursday we also held a suicide prevention training in Augusta, GA for the SBHP program. You can learn more about this program and find out if your state is involved by visiting the SBHP section of our website.

In addition to our face-to-face events, we’ve also got plenty of offerings in the virtual realm. This Wednesday we’ll be holding our next CDP Presents webinar. Dr. Andy Santanello and Dr. Matt Sacks will be leading a discussion on “Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Service Members and Veterans”. It will be 11 May from noon to 1:30 p.m. Eastern. This webinar will also provide one free CE to all those who register, attend and complete a post-event survey and evaluation. You can also check out recordings of all of our previous CDP Presents events by clicking here. Registration is also available for our next couple of two-day online EBP training events. On 17-18 May we will hold a suicide prevention training, then on 22-23 we will have a training on Cognitive Processing Therapy Both of these events will be held in Second Life.

In the CDP Blog this week, April Thompson’s Staff Perspective entry is entitled “A Military Family’s Dilemma About Moving”. She talks about her own experiences with uprooting their family and the difficulties that arise when faced with the possibility of pulling her children out of their high school. The Guest Perspective blog, “Recommendations on How to Best Characterize and Document Suicide Risk”, was by Dr. Marjan Halloway and her team. Determining and documenting suicide risk in clients can be challenging for many providers. Dr. Halloway offers some guidance on how to correctly handle this difficult situation. Also, don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update It’s packed with the latest news, links and relevant journal articles.

That’s all for this time around. We hope everyone has a happy Mother’s Day this weekend. We’ll see you back again on Monday for a brand-new entry in our “By the Numbers” series!
