CDP News: Nov. 13, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This week was broken up with Veterans Day in this middle, so it slowed things down a little, but we’ve still got plenty to talk about.

Our biggest event this week was supporting the Joining Forces Wellness Week. For the second year in a row, CDP has provided logistical and technical support for a week-long series of webinars put on by Joining Forces. These hour-long presentations are from a variety of organizations and focus on the health and well-being of Service members, Veterans and their families. All of these presentations were recorded and will be available for on-demand viewing on the CDP’s website. While not yet available, continuing education credits will also be offered in the future for these recordings. It was a great week with some very interesting presentations and speakers. We hope that people who weren’t able to attend the live events make some time to watch the video versions.

This week also featured the release of our newest podcast in the CDP Voices series, “Dissociation and PTSD.” Dr. Kelly Chrestman discusses the relationship between dissociation and PTSD and how to help highly dissociative patients. This is the third part of her series of podcasts on PTSD.

Next Wednesday we’ll be headed to Midwest City in Oklahoma to present the University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program Rose State College. This one-day program is designed to help colleges and their staff to better understand the unique challenges faced by Service members and Veterans on campus. For more information about the UC4 program or to find out how you can bring it to your local college or university, please visit our UC4 page.

Registration is currently open for our December online training, Prolonged Exposure Therapy via Second Life. This training will take place on 15-16 December. The theoretical underpinnings and research behind PE will be covered, along with the main clinical techniques used in this structured protocol. Registration for this event is $30 and comes with 13.5 CEs. If you’re interested in the course, we suggest signing up quickly as seats are going quickly and the event will fill up soon.

Finally, this week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Diana Dolan. Her blog is entitled “If I’m Not Sleeping, Nobody’s Sleeping”. In it Dr. Dolan interviews pediatric behavioral sleep expert, Dr. Brandy Roane. We often discuss sleep difficulties in the military, but deployments can also be very disrupting to the children of Service members. These disruptions may compound existing normal pediatric sleep issues, resulting in far more significant problems. Dr. Roane discusses some of the common symptoms, as well as strategies for combating sleep disruption in children. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s all for now. We hope everyone has a good weekend and joins us on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
