CDP News: Nov. 6, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We had several events this week and next week is shortened by the holiday, but we've got plenty on the horizon.
We were all over the country this week. We visited Grayling, MI on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program. To find out more about this program, please visit the SBHP program page on our website here.
We also traveled to Moscow, ID on Tuesday to present our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program. Then on Thursday we brought the UC4 program to Fresno, CA and Fresno City College. This program is designed to educate counselings center and university staff about the unique challenges faced by Service members and Veterans on campus. To find out more about this program or to learn how you can bring it to your local college or university, please visit the UC4 section of our website.
Our online events have been increasingly popular and we're getting lots of requests for them. Registration for our December online training, Prolonged Exposure Therapy via Second Life is currently ongoing. This training will take place on 15-16 December. If you're interested in participating in this event, we suggest you sign up soon, as there aren't a lot of spots left available.
Speaking of upcoming online events, next week is a big event for us. The CDP is proud to once again support the Joining Forces Initiative’s Wellness Week. Each day next week, we’ll be hosting a series of hour-long webinars on a variety of topics regarding the health of Service members and Veterans. Participants who attend and complete a post-event evaluation and survey will be eligible for one free CE/CME/CNE credit. For the specific topics for each day or to register, please click here.
Finally, this week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Jenna Ermold. Her entry is titled "In Their Own Words: The Voices of the Military Culture Training." Dr. Ermold talks about the lessons learned when interviewing Service members and Veterans for the online Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals. She talks about some common missteps that behavioral health providers may may when working with Service members, Veterans and their families. This is a great read for those interested in starting to work with military-connected clients, or even those who already do, but would like to increase their skills. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.
That’s it for this time around. Enjoy your weekend and join us on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
