CDP News: November 28, 2014

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This week was a short one due to the holiday, but we’ve still got plenty to talk about this time around!

Today is the final day for advanced online registration for the CDP’s Southeast Regional Civilian 1-Week Training. This the last opportunity to guarantee yourself a spot in the last 1-week training of the year. The event will be held 8-12 December in Miami, FL. If you’d like to begin working with Service members, Veterans and their families, or even if you already work with a military population, this training a great opportunity to enhance your skills. Check out the event’s page for more details or to register before the close of business today.

If you can’t make it to Miami, but are still interested in taking part in CDP’s training, our live online training events might be for you. We’ve currently got a Prolonged Exposure Therapy training delivered via Adobe Connect coming up on 18-19 December. These online events have proven to be quite popular with participants and they’ve all filled up. So if you’re interested in taking part, be sure and sign up soon. Registration is $27 and comes with 13.5 CEUs.

We’ve got two new additions to our Learn Now section. The first is our newest Staff Voices podcast. In it, Dr. Kelly Chrestman talks about the “Fear of Fear.” This is the second part of an extended series by Dr. Chrestman on PTSD. If you haven’t heard the first entry in the series “The Role of Re-Experiencing in PTSD,” it’s well worth a listen! This week also marked the release of a new part of our PE Session Notes series. This entry is on “hot spots,” explaining the concept and how to focus on a specific hot spot during an imaginal exposure.

The CDP has created a new program for those interested in a career in military behavioral health, the CDP Summer Institute: Preparing for a Military-Focused Internship.  We’re partnering with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) with this program which is designed to raise awareness of military behavioral health careers and to increase students’ competitiveness for military-focused internships. This six-day training course, held from 8-13 June 2015, will bring participants to D.C. to receive training in a variety of topics. The CDP will assist with costs of travel, room and board. For most attendees, this financial assistance will be sufficient to cover all costs. We also encourage students local to the D.C. area to apply and attend the program. For more information, please visit the program’s page here.

In the CDP’s blog, this week’s Staff Perspective column is by Dr. Anthony McCormick. In it, he Dr. McCormick relates his experiences and suggestions for helping patients improve their perspectives on the use of psychotropic medication. It’s a very informative take on an important topic. It’s definitely worth checking out. There’s no Research Update this week, due to the holidays, but we’ll be back with the latest news, articles and useful links next week. Or you can always take a look at some of the previous entries.

That’s it for this time around. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you back here next week for a new edition of the By the Numbers column.
