CDP News: Oct. 23, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. In addition to our usual busy schedule, we’ve got lots of big events coming up in the next couple of weeks!

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Star Behavioral Health Providers (SBHP) program brought us to Cleveland, OH to present there. Next week we’ll be headed to Traverse City, MI on Wednesday for another SBHP training. To find out more about this program, please visit the SBHP program page on our website here. We also had multiple engagements for our Speakers Bureau, as they presented in both Linthicum, MD and in San Diego, CA this week.

We’ll be holding two separate week-long training events next week. First up, we’ll be having the latest iteration of the Topics in Military & Deployment Psychology course at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences campus in Bethesda, MD.  This event brings uniformed providers from all branches of the military together to learn about issues facing Service members, their families and military behavioral health providers. We’ll also be holding our Regional One-Week Civilian Training program in the Albany, NY-metro area all week. This program is focused on providing civilian providers a wide variety of training from CDP staff members. If you can’t make it to this one, but would like to be emailed when registration for future Regional One-Week Civilian Training opportunities, please complete the form here.

This is the last week to register for our next online training event, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia on 5-6 November via Second Life. However, we will be opening registration for our December online training, Prolonged Exposure Therapy via Second Life today. This training will take place on 15-16 December.

Speaking of upcoming online events, the CDP is proud to once again support the Joining Forces Initiative’s Wellness Week. During the week of 9-13 November we’ll be hosting a series of hour-long webinars on a variety of topics regarding the health of Service members and Veterans. For the specific topics for each day or to register, please click here.

Finally, this week in the CDP blog, our Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Lisa French. Her blog is entitled “Suicide Postvention: Don’t Forget Clinic Survivors”. Dr. French discusses her own personal experiences with the impact that a patient suicide can have among providers and clinic staff. She provides some important tips and suggestions for provider sustainment in the wake of a suicide event. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s all for now. We hope everyone has a good weekend and joins us on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” column.
