CDP News: Oct. 3, 2014

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We had multiple events going on this week and there’s plenty to talk about in the upcoming weeks as well!

On Thursday, our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program was proud to present the keynote speech at the American College Counseling Association Conference in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Paula Domenici delivered a presentation on moral injury in Veterans. For more information about the UC4 or to learn how you can bring the program to your local college or university, please visit the program page here.

On Tuesday and Wednesday Dr. Kevin Holloway gave a training on Prolonged Exposure to the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island in Hempstead, NY. Next Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be in New Paltz, NY to deliver a training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression at the Institute for Disaster Mental Health. If you or your organization would like to host a CDP speaker, please visit our Speakers Bureau page for more information or to submit a request.

Also coming up this Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be headed down to Macon, GA to present a tier-3 training for the Star Behavioral Health Providers program. For more information about the tiered training and the SBHP program, click here to visit the program page.

Speaking about upcoming events, we’re in the last few weeks before our Military and Veteran Behavioral Health Post-Master’s Certificate program begins. For this unique training opportunity, CDP has partnered with Widener University to teach best clinical practices to mental health providers. The program covers a wide variety of topics including military culture, the deployment cycle, challenges faced by military families, depression, suicide and many more. This program is designed for non-military mental health professionals with at least a master’s degree who are actively treating, or plan to treat, the military/veteran population. The program is held over three weekends at Widener University in Chester, PA. For more information or to register please visit the program page here.

In the CDP Blog this week, the Staff Perspective was by Chris Adams. He took a look at the Concussion Coach mobile app. CDP is always on the lookout for new ways to help improve treatment and education for both providers and patients. Apps can certainly be a great way to do both! Also, don’t forget to read this week’s Research Update. It’s packed with the latest in news, journal articles and useful links from all around the Web.

This week also featured the release of the latest CDP podcast, “Why Do We Sleep?”. In it, Dr. Bill Brim discusses the question, as well as what happens when we sleep and why we sleep when we do. This is the first entry in a planned series that will explore many common questions about the concept of sleep. So keep an eye on our podcasts page for future episodes in this series, as well as others!

That’s it for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see you on Monday for a new entry in our By the Numbers column!
