CDP News: September 6, 2013

Welcome to the latest edition of CDP News, where we take a look at all the recent news in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This week was shortened due to the Labor Day holiday, but that didn’t stop us from getting out there and holding a training event! On Thursday, we presented our University Counseling Center Core Competency (UC4) program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It was a great program and we’d like to thank all the participants for helping to make it so. Next week we’ll be delivering our UC4-extended program when we visit Penn State University to present two days of Cognitive Processing Therapy training there.

We’re in the final stages of preparing for the eight-day Topics in Deployment Psychology training, which kicks off on September 16, one week from Monday. This military-oriented program brings participants from all across the country to Bethesda, Maryland for intensive training with CDP staff as well as guest lecturers and experts. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it to help train these providers.

This week’s Staff Voices column featured a video of CDP’s Dr. Augusto Ruiz interviewing Dr. Marvin Podd, longtime Navy Internship Training Director at Walter Reed National Medical Center. It’s a bit different from our usual blog entries, but Dr. Podd has a wealth of experience and insight from his long career. We’ll be adding more clips from this interview in the future, so keep an eye out for them. As always, the weekly Research Update has plenty of interesting information and links from all around the web. Take a few minutes to check it out, if you haven’t already.

As a reminder, registration for our week-long training, Addressing the Psychological Health of Warriors and Their Families, is open. The event will be held in San Diego, CA, 7-11 October. This training offers a great opportunity for providers to hone their skill and knowledge about working with Service Members, Veterans, and their family members. There are only three weeks left to sign up and space is limited for this event. If you’re interested in attending, sign up today!

Finally, we’ve been getting lots of great feedback about the new website we recently rolled out. We’re always looking for more though, so if you’ve got any questions, comments, or suggestions of what you’d like to see on the new DeploymentPsych.org, please let us know. This site is designed to help us support providers in their use of evidence-based treatments. If there’s any way we can do that better, we’d love to hear about it. That’s it for this time around, catch you next week!
