"The military spouse unemployment rate, according to the National Military Spouse Network: Fourteen years ago, the military spouse unemployment rate was 26%. Comparatively, the national unemployment rate was 9.6% and 11.5% for veterans.

Today, the national and veteran unemployment rates have fallen significantly to 3.7% and 3% respectively while the military spouse unemployment rate remains ridiculously high at 21% (statistically unchanged for nearly a decade).

These frustrating statistics beg the question, why is it not getting better? It’s not that significant efforts haven’t been made to improve the employment situation for military spouses. Year after year, dedicated public and private professionals across industries, led by the DOD, join forces to spread awareness among employers about the benefits of hiring spouses and create targeted career and educational opportunities and resources to assist spouses in enhancing their marketability.

It would appear there are more resources, programs, and campaigns in existence today than ever before throughout our military and neighboring communities. And yet, as of January 2024, the military spouse unemployment rate remains unchanged at 21%, nearly 6% higher than the national unemployment rate of 3.7%..
