Family members reported safety/protection as the main reason for suicide decedents’ firearm ownership, which was significantly associated with unsecure firearm storage practices (OR = 3.8, 95% CI, 1.65, 8.75, x2 = 9.88, p = 0.0017). Ownership for safety/protection and lifetime history of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) from the military medical record (OR = 3.65, 95% CI, 1.48 – 9.02, x2 = 7.89 p = 0.0050) predicted unsecure storage.
