The amount spent each year by the Department of Defense (DOD) "to compensate the average active duty servicemember (including) cash, benefits, and contributions to retirement programs," according to a recent Congressional Research Service report -- Military Pay: Key Questions and Answers. Although, as the report points out, "some estimates of compensation costs are higher."

The number of "unique individuals (who) served at least 1 day in the active component" from from October 1, 2001 through October 1, 2016, according to an article in the January 2017 issue of the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch's Medical Surveillance Monthly Report -- Selected demographic and service characteristics of the U.S. Armed Forces, active and reserve components, 2001, 2009, and 2016.

The number of student veterans who "have earned over 450,000 post-secondary degrees or certificates using the Post-9/11 GI Bill," according to the National Veteran Education Success Tracker, a report released recently by the Student Veterans of America. The report indicates that roughly 90 percent of these were "current or prior enlisted personnel."
