CDP News: 28 September 2018

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. September is already over and we’re heading into a busy October.

Yesterday we wrapped up our Suicide Prevention webinar series with “Lethal Means Safety Counseling to Reduce Suicide Risk.” We’re very happy with how this series went. We had several great presenters who delivered some very important information on suicide prevention this month. If you missed out on any of the presentations from this month, we’ll be posting recordings of all of this month’s events for on-demand viewing in the next couple of weeks.

Also on the subject of suicide prevention, if you haven’t visited our Suicide Prevention spotlight page, we invite you to check it out. This page has a wealth of resources, including blogs, infographics, training opportunities, and more. Though Suicide Prevention Awareness month is coming to an end, we’ll be keep this page around to serve as a resource.

Registration for October’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life will be closing on Monday. It will be held on 4-5 October. The training will begin with a discussion of depression in the military, followed by a summary of the theory underlying cognitive behavioral therapy. Participants will then learn how to conceptualize depressed patients according to this model, plan treatment, and utilize both cognitive and behavioral strategies. Registration is $45 and comes with 13.5 CEs. If you’re interested in attending, sign up today!

Speaking of upcoming online training events, we opened up registration for the Serving Student Veterans on Campus, which will be held on 13 November. This day-long core competency is designed to address cultural and clinical concerns of Veterans and Service members on a university or college campus. This will be our first presentation of this training and we’re excited to share it with all of the participants. Registration for this event is $30 and comes with 7 CEs.

Even though it feels like summer just ended, we’re already getting ready for next year’s Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces, which will be held 10-14 June 2019. The Summer Institute is a five-day course for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology. The application period will open up on 22 October. For more information on the program visit the Summer Institute page here.

Over on the CDP blog, our latest Staff Perspective was by Dr. Lisa French, “The Chaplains-CARE Program – Preparing Navy Chaplains to Better Serve At-Risk Service Members.” Dr. French discusses this program which is designed to provide specialized, evidence-based training on suicide intervention to chaplains, who are often uniquely positioned to assist. Also, don’t forget to check out the weekly CDP Research Update. This week, in addition to the usual journal articles, news and links, we also feature a special section on suicide prevention.

That’s it for this time around. Have a good weekend everyone. We hope to see you back here on Monday for a brand-new By the Numbers!
