CDP News: 30 November 2018

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re wrapping up November and heading full steam into December and the holiday season.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we presented a training on Cognitive Processing Therapy in Second Life. It was a capacity crowd and we were excited to be able to present to so many interested providers. We’re going to try and schedule another CPT training for early in the new year to accommodate all of those who weren’t able to attend this event, so keep an eye out! Our next EBP will be December’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) on 13-14 December. There’s one week left to sign up, but spots are filling fast. If you’re interested in attending, we suggest signing up soon. Registration for this event is $45 and comes with 13.5 CEs. This training will be held via Zoom teleconferencing software, as opposed to our usual presentations in Second Life. We had some requests for events on different platforms, so we’re going to be holding a few events in via Zoom.

Registration is also available for January’s Prolonged Exposure training via Second Life. It will be held on 24-25 January from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

December's CDP Presents topic will be "Working with LFBT Service Members and Veterans - An Overview". It will be held on 12 December from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. This 90-minute webinar will provide data related to rates of LGBT person in the civilian, military and Veteran communities and include a history of LGBT individuals in the U.S. and within the military. Participants will be eligible to receive one free CE after attending and completing a post-training survey and knowledge evaluation. You can also sign up for 15 January's CDP Presents "Blueprints for Suicide Treatment in the Military - The Lost Art of Case Conceptualization."

Registration is also ongoing for next year’s Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces. Next year's event will be held 10-14 June 2019. The Summer Institute is a five-day course for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology. The application period will close on 22 January 2019. For more information on the program visit the Summer Institute page here.

We wrap up this month’s focus on military families with a blog entry by April Thompson, “Staying Connected During Deployment – An Age-Old Challenge for Military Families.” In it, she discusses her own family’s experiences with communication during deployments, while also examining some relevant research on the topic. After a week off due to Thanksgiving, CDP’s weekly Research Update is back! As always, it’s packed with the latest news, journal entries, and useful links from around the Web.

With that, we’re going to wrap up this week’s edition of CDP News. We hope to see everyone back here on Monday for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” series. As always, we’d love to hear from you if you have any suggestions that you’d like to see in future editions on this blog.
