CDP News: 9 November 2018
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re heading into a long weekend with Veterans Day on Monday, but we’ve got plenty to cover first.
If you’re reading this early enough, don’t forget to join us for our next CDP Presents webinar, “Building Military Family Resilience.” It will be held on from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday. The lecture will present a general overview of military family resilience. A summary of the basic demographics of military families will be presented in addition to normative stressors associated with military family life. Factors that can promote or impede military family resilience will be reviewed, as well as practical, evidence-base interventions and skills that providers can employ to enhance resilience in military families. Finally, resources regarding available programs aimed at promoting family resilience will be shared. Participants are eligible to receive 1.5 CEs for this free event. For more details or to register, please click here.
If you already missed it, don't worry! We'll be posting a recording of the event soon. In the meantime, you can also register for December's CDP Presents "Working with LFBT Service Members and Veterans - An Overview".It will be held on 12 December from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST.
On Tuesday, we will be holding our first online Serving Student Veterans on Campus. This day-long core competency is designed to address cultural and clinical concerns of Veterans and Service members on a university or college campus. Registration for this event is $30 and comes with 7 CEs.
Registration opened this week for December’s online EBP, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) on 13-14 December. Registration for this event is $45 and come with 13.5 CEs. One item of note on this training, it’s going to be held via Zoom teleconferencing software, as opposed to our usual Second Life platform. We’re trying out some different platforms to reach those who may not be able to attend via Second Life. We’re hoping to do more like this in 2019. We expect this one to fill up pretty soon. If you’re interested in attending, we suggest signing up today!
Registration is also ongoing for next year’s Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces. Next year's event will be held 10-14 June 2019. The Summer Institute is a five-day course for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology. The application period will close on 22 January 2019. For more information on the program visit the Summer Institute page here.
As part of a month-long focus on military families, Dr. Lisa French wrote about military children in her blog entry “Through the Eyes of a Military Child” In it she discusses her family’s experiences, including an interview with her 8-year-old son AJ. Also, don’t forget to check out the weekly already CDP Research Update. It's packed with the latest journal articles, news and links from around the Web.
That’s it for this week’s CDP News. Have a great weekend everyone! We hope you all can take some time on Monday to celebrate the sacrifices of all Veterans and their families.
