CDP News: Feb. 5, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It was another busy week here at the CDP, as we had events going on all over.

Our biggest event was the week-long Topics in Military and Deployment Psychology course. This training brought military behavioral health providers from all over to Bethesda. MD for in-depth training on issues facing Service members, Veterans, and their families. As usual, it was a great experience for both our participants, as well as the CDP instructors. We love to be able to meet and interact with uniformed providers during these events. Our next iteration will be 21-25 March.

We also held an online training on Cognitive Processing Therapy in Group (CPT-G) via Adobe Connect on Tuesday. If you’ve been trained in the standard CPT protocol and you’d like to learn about the group version, we will be holding another session on 8 March. This one is tailored for those on the west coast and will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. PACIFIC time. Though providers from all timezones are welcome to attend. Just make sure you adjust the start time to your own local time!

Speaking of online events, next week we’ll be holding a training on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression (CBT-D) via Second Life on Wednesday and Thursday. Unfortunately, there’s no more room for additional participants in this event. However, we do have some other great online events coming up soon. On 16 February, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST, Dr. Diana Dolan will present “An Introduction to Chronic Pain in the Military and the Role of Behavioral Health Providers”, as part of the monthly CDP Presents webinar series. Registration is also open for the 15 March event, “Psychological Consequences of Brain Injury and Implications for Treatment in Service Members and Veterans,” presented by guest speakers Dr. Johanna Wolf and Dr. Jenelle Anthony. As with most of our CDP Presents events, participants who attend and complete a post-event evaluation and survey will be eligible for one free CE for each of the upcoming webinars.

We’ve also got some face-to-face events coming up. The Regional Civilian One-Week Training program will be held 21-25 March, in Long Beach, CA. It’s $95 for five full days of instruction on a variety of military- and deployment-related topics. For a specific agenda, other information on this program or to register, please click here. Space is limited and we expect this event to reach capacity. So if you’d like to attend, we suggest signing up soon! If you’re interested, but can’t make it out to California, our next iteration will be 4-8 April in Des Moines, IA. To sign up for more information about this program, please complete this form.

In the CDP Blog this week, we took a quick tour of the new Military Culture homepage.  The Military Culture section is a very popular and important section of the CDP’s site. In addition to the four-module online course, “Military Culture: Core Competencies for Healthcare Professionals,” there’s a ton of great and valuable information on the subject there. It’s definitely worth spending some time exploring, if you haven’t already. Also, don’t forget to check out the Research Update as usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s all for this time around. Have a great weekend everyone and we’ll see you back here on Monday for another entry in our “By the Numbers” series.
