CDP News: Jan. 29, 2016

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. Like much of the East coast, we’re still recovering from last week’s historic blizzard. Despite that we’ve got lots to talk about!

If you’re looking for the opportunity to get out of the cold and take part in some great training opportunities, check out our upcoming Regional Civilian One-Week Training, to be held 21-25 March, in Long Beach, CA. It’s $95 for five full days of instruction on a variety of military- and deployment-related topics. For a specific agenda, other information on this program or to register, please click here. If you can’t make it to this one, we will be holding more sessions coming up this year. If you would like to be notified via email about these, please complete the form here.

If you’d like to attend a CDP event from the comfort of your own home or office, check out CDP Presents. 16 February, from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST, Dr. Diana Dolan will present “An Introduction to Chronic Pain in the Military and the Role of Behavioral Health Providers”. Chronic pain is a very common issue for Service member and Veterans, so we’re looking forward to being able to provide training on this topic. Participants who attend and complete a post-event evaluation and survey will be eligible for one free CE.

Even with the inclement weather this week, we were still able to get out and host some training events around the country. On Thursday and Friday, we were in Boston, MA to present on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) as part of our Speakers Bureau program. For more information or to find out how to bring a CDP speaker to your next event, click here On Friday, we were in Florida at Tallahassee Community College delivering  the University Counseling Center Core Competency training (UC4) for a consortium of local colleges and universities.

Next week we’ll be closer to home, as we present the Topics in Military and Deployment Psychology course. This five-day training brings together behavioral health providers from all branches of the military to Bethesda for in-depth training on issues facing Service members, Veterans, and their families.

In the CDP Blog this week, Dr. Libby Parins talked about a topic that is familiar to us all in her blog, “Musing About Grief.” In it, she reflected upon her own personal experiences with grief, examined the empirically-based treatments for grief. We were happy to feature Dr. Pat DeLeon in our latest “Guest Perspective” blog. He discussed the changes he has seen over the course of his career and those that still need to occur. If you missed it, click here to read “Reflections From the Past, or Perhaps the Future?” Also, don’t forget to check out the Research Update as usual, it’s got all the latest news, articles, and useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s all for this time around. We’re going to spend the weekend enjoying the warmer temperatures and hoping the snow melts soon! We’ll see you back here on Monday for another entry in our “By the Numbers” series.
