CDP News: June 5, 2015

Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re heading into summer and things are certainly heating up around here.

On Wednesday, we were in Savannah, GA for another Tier 1 training as a part of the Star Behavioral Health Providers program. Next Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll holding Tier 2 training events in both Indianapolis, IN and Azusa, CA. Visit the SBHP section of our website for more information about the program and the associated training tiers.

Thursday, we visited Brown University in Rhode Island for our University Counseling Center Core Competency program. Next Wednesday and Thursday, we’ll be presenting the Expanded UC4 (UC4e) program in Lexington at the University of Kentucky. This one will be a two-day training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

Also on Thursday and Friday we had our latest online training event on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) via Second Life. Dr. Diana Dolan presented to a great group of participants from coast-to-coast and even some overseas! This is a great example of why we’re so excited about these online events. They allow us to present to participant who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend these training events.

If you’re interested in attending an online training, we’ve got the schedule for the upcoming year on our training calendar here. Registration for these events will open approximately 45 days before the event. The schedule includes training events on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression, as well as training in Suicide Prevention for a military population. If you’d like to be emailed a reminder when they open, you can sign up for our online events email list here. The next online training available for registration is CPT via Second Life on 1-2 July. This event will most likely fill up, so if you’d like to attend, sign up soon!

Speaking of upcoming events, we extended the registration deadline for our Great Lakes Regional 1-Week Civilian Training until next Friday, 12 June. This five-day training will be held in Minneapolis, MN from 15-19 June. It is designed to provide education for civilian behavioral health providers on deployment-spectrum behavioral health concerns facing the military population. It features the choice of two overall tracks, featuring a variety of breakout sessions to choose from. The first track focuses on the treatment of PTSD, while the second is based on health psychology. For more information or to sign up, please visit the event page here.

Finally, over in the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Regina Shillinglaw, who examined the use of the modifier “Interrupted” in suicide nomenclature. She talks about the correct usage and also provides a few examples. Also, don’t forget to take a few minutes to read this week’s Research Update on the CDP’s Blog. It’s got all the latest news, articles and plenty of useful links related to deployment psychology.

That’s it for this time around. We’ll see you back here next with a new entry in our “By the Numbers” series. Have a great weekend everyone!
