CDP News: Nov. 15, 2013

Welcome to the latest edition of CDP News! We like to spend a few moments every Friday looking back on recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. It’s been a busy week for our University Counseling Center Core Competency program. On Thursday, we were out at Sonoma State University in Rhonert Park, CA presenting. We also just opened up registration for our follow-up UC4-e program where we’re be teaching a two-day session on Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) at the University of California, Irvine on 7-8 January, 2014.

Also, the UC4 program got a nice plug in the Frederick News-Post newspaper. Sharon Holland, Deputy Vice-President for External Affairs at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences wrote a letter to the editor about the program in response to a recent article in the News-Post about difficulties faced by student-Veterans as they transitioned to campus life. It's always nice to get the word out about the opportunities CDP offers, especially when it comes from avenues such as this!

If you missed the announcement last week, a new online course in military culture is now available. It’s the first of four modules designed to increase awareness and knowledge of military culture and its importance in working with Service members and Veterans. CDP helped design the content of the course and we’ve also launched a new section on our website designed to act as a companion to the course. It offers a wide variety of resources to supplement and expand upon those in the course.

This week’s Staff Perspective featured the final segment of our own Dr. Augusto Ruiz’s interview with Dr. Marvin Podd, Navy Internship Training Director at Walter Reed National Medical Center. They look back on Dr. Podd’s long career and talk about some of his most important takeaways and lessons. Don’t forget to check out this week’s Research Update as well. It’s got plenty of great journal articles, news, and relevant links from around the Web.

That’s all for this week. Have a great weekend and we’ll see everyone on Monday!
