CDP News: 16 November 2018
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. This was a very busy week, due to the Veterans Day holiday, as well as the first dose of winter weather here at CDP headquarters!
On Tuesday, we held our first online Serving Student Veterans on Campus. This day-long core competency course is designed to address cultural and clinical concerns of Veterans and Service members on a university or college campus. We had numerous participants from a variety of schools. We’re looking forward to holding another session for even more participants.
Our next online event will be December's CDP Presents "Working with LFBT Service Members and Veterans - An Overview". It will be held on 12 December from noon to 1:30 p.m. EST. This 90-minute webinar will provide data related to rates of LGBT person in the civilian, military and Veteran communities and include a history of LGBT individuals in the U.S. and within the military. Participants will be eligible to receive one free CE after attending and completing a post-training survey and knowledge evaluation.
Speaking of training events, registration is filling up for December’s online EBP, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) on 13-14 December. Registration for this event is $45 and comes with 13.5 CEs. We’re trying something different this time around, as we’ll be holding this training via Zoom teleconferencing software, as opposed to our usual Second Life platform. We’ve got a few more training events on Zoom scheduled in 2019, so keep an eye out.
Registration is also ongoing for next year’s Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces. Next year's event will be held 10-14 June 2019. The Summer Institute is a five-day course for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology. The application period will close on 22 January 2019. For more information on the program visit the Summer Institute page here.
We’ve recently updated and consolidated our webinar and eLearning page. You can visit the new section at https://deploymentpsych.org/online-training-courses. There you can register for upcoming webinars, view archived events, take our self-paced eLearning courses and more. We’ll be adding even more content as time goes on, so we hope you’ll frequently swing by and see what new!
Continuing November’s focus on military families, Erin Frick took a look at the recent holiday in her blog entry “Veterans Day – More Than Just a Day Off Work or a Free Meal for Military Families.” In her piece, she discusses the origins of the holiday and what it means to her and her family. Also, don’t forget to check out the weekly CDP Research Update. It's packed with the latest journal articles, news and links from around the Web.
With that, we’re going to wrap up this week’s edition of CDP News. We hope everyone stays warm out there and has a great weekend. We’ll see you all right back here on Monday for a new entry in our By the Numbers series!
