CDP News: 19 October 2018
Welcome to this week’s edition of CDP News! We like to use this space to review recent happenings in and around the Center for Deployment Psychology, while also looking ahead to upcoming events. We’re almost through with October, but we’ve got a few month events this month.
On Monday, the application period for next year's Summer Institute: Preparing for a Career in the Armed Forces will kick-off. Next year's event will be held 10-14 June 2019. The Summer Institute is a five-day course for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year doctoral students in clinical or counseling psychology. For more information on the program visit the Summer Institute page here.
Then on Thursday, we’ll be holding our next CDP Presents webinar entitled, “Psychological Interventions in Pain Management.” It will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. The aims of this program are to review chronic pain education and common treatment pathways. More specifically, evidence-based approaches to understanding and treating chronic pain will be provided. Talking tips for use with patients regarding education and recommended treatment approaches will be covered throughout the presentation. Participants are eligible to receive 1.5 CEs for this free event. For more details or to register, please click here.
Registration is currently available for November’s CDP Presents as well, on “Building Military Family Resilience.” It will be held on 9 November and will present a general overview of military family resilience. A summary of the basic demographics of military families will be presented in addition to normative stressors associated with military family life. Factors that can promote or impede military family resilience will be reviewed, as well as practical, evidence-base interventions and skills that providers can employ to enhance resilience in military families. Finally, resources regarding available programs aimed at promoting family resilience will be shared.
Also in November, we will be holding our first online Serving Student Veterans on Campus training on the 13th. This day-long core competency is designed to address cultural and clinical concerns of Veterans and Service members on a university or college campus. This will be our first online presentation of this training and we’re excited to share it with all of the participants. Registration for this event is $30 and comes with 7 CEs.
Lastly, on the training front, registration for our next online EBP training, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) opened up this week and is filling up fast. The training will be held on 27-28 November. Registration for this event will be $45 and come with 13.5 CEs. If you’re interested in participating, we suggest signing up soon!
Over on the CDP Blog, this week’s Staff Perspective entry was by Dr. Kaleigh DeSimone. In her piece “Contextualizing Moral Emotions”, she discussed the concept of moral injury including potential causes and treatments. Also, don’t forget to check out the weekly already CDP Research Update. It's packed with the latest journal articles, news and links from around the Web.
With that, we’re going to wrap up this week’s CDP News. We hope everyone enjoys the fall weather this weekend. Come back next week for a new entry in our “By the Numbers” series.
